Verification against a stated specification
Calibration establishes a machine's relationship to reference values with a stated uncertainty. What most inspection departments buy is performance verification: a pass/fail test against ISO 10360-2 or ASME B89.4.1, usually paired with geometric adjustment and, where the controller allows it, an update to the volumetric error compensation map.
Bridge, gantry, cantilever and horizontal-arm machines are tested under that pairing. Fourth-axis rotary tables are tested separately under ISO 10360-3:2000, using two test spheres at a specified height difference and radius. Articulated arms, laser trackers and multisensor systems each carry their own governing standard, applied where applicable to the configuration on hand.
What a visit covers
Each calibration visit follows a fixed sequence, starting with the scales and ending with a certificate.
- 01
Scale and reader head
X, Y and Z scales are cleaned and inspected; reader head output is checked against specification.
- 02
Air bearings and lines
Bearing clearance and airline condition are checked before any geometry test is run.
- 03
Geometry
Straightness, linearity and squareness are tested in the XY, ZX and ZY planes.
- 04
Length and probing error
E0 and E150 are tested per ISO 10360-2, with PFTU probing error tested on a separate calibrated test sphere per ISO 10360-5.
- 05
As-left verification
Results are re-run after any adjustment and recorded alongside the as-found data.
Sequence on site
- 01
Inspect
Scales, reader heads, bearings and lines are checked before any test runs.
- 02
Test as-found
Geometry, length and probing error are measured and recorded before adjustment.
- 03
Adjust
Geometric correction and compensation-map updates are applied where the controller allows it.
- 04
Verify as-left
Tests are repeated and the certificate is issued against the governing standard.

Why Indianapolis CMM Calibration and Repair
- 01
As-found recorded first
Adjustment never precedes the recorded as-found result, by sequence.
- 02
Repair scoped separately
Probe, scale, bearing and drive repair is quoted apart from routine verification.
- 03
Error-map access checked
OEM-locked compensation maps are identified before a visit is scheduled.
