Common Questions

If a question below is not covered, it can be answered directly — see the contact page.

Do you offer CMM calibration near me in Indianapolis?

On-site work covers Indianapolis and the surrounding counties, with routing into Columbus, Kokomo, Lafayette, Terre Haute, Fort Wayne and Elkhart. Outside that radius, ship-in service is quoted with return freight included in the estimate.

What is the difference between calibration and verification?

Calibration establishes the relationship between a machine's readings and reference values with a stated uncertainty. Most shop-floor work is performance verification: a pass/fail test against a stated specification such as ISO 10360-2.

What happens if the machine fails the as-found test?

As-found data is recorded before any adjustment. Out-of-tolerance results are reported with enough detail to assess which inspected parts may be affected back to the last passing calibration.

What does ISO 10360-2 actually test on the machine?

Five calibrated test lengths are measured three times each in seven positions, giving 105 measurements. Each deviation from the calibrated value is a length measurement error, checked against the stated maximum permissible error.

How long is the machine down for a calibration visit?

Time on site depends on axis travel, probe configuration and whether geometry correction is needed. The quotation returned once machine details are provided includes a time-on-site estimate.

What temperature does the room need to be for testing?

ISO 1 sets 20°C as the dimensional reference temperature. The gradient per hour and per metre matters more than the absolute reading, and thermal soak time is built into scheduling.

How is a certificate's measurement uncertainty determined?

Uncertainty is calculated per ISO/TS 23165 from artifact calibration, thermal expansion, alignment and fixturing, then expanded using a coverage factor of k=2 for approximately 95% confidence.

Will a certificate satisfy an IATF or AS9100 auditor?

Whether the specific measurement and range appear on the performing laboratory's published scope of accreditation is what gets checked, not the certificate alone. Scope is verified against the instrument before a quotation is issued.

What is an error map, and can it be updated during the visit?

The volumetric error compensation map corrects systematic geometric error across the measuring volume. Updates are possible where the controller allows write access; some OEM-locked controllers restrict this to factory service.

Does Z540.3 apply to a calibration certificate?

ANSI/NCSL Z540.3-2006 governs the calibration programme: guard banding and the 2% probability-of-false-accept rule. It is typically cited in aerospace and defense purchase orders, separate from the machine test itself.
